Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage of income do freelancers pay in taxes?+
More than employees, because freelancers pay both the employee and employer portions of Social Security and Medicare taxes (15.3% total on net self-employment income up to the SS wage base). On top of that, federal income tax rates apply (10-37% depending on income), plus state income tax if applicable. A freelancer earning $80,000 net might pay: $11,304 in self-employment tax, roughly $11,000 in federal income tax (after the SE deduction), plus state taxes. Total effective tax rate of 25-35% is common for freelancers earning $60,000-150,000. Quarterly estimated tax payments are required to avoid underpayment penalties.
Can I deduct my home office as a freelancer?+
Yes, if you use the space regularly and exclusively for business. The IRS is strict on 'exclusively' — a desk in your living room doesn't qualify; a room used only for work does. You can deduct the percentage of your home used for business (calculate square footage of office divided by total home square footage) applied to rent/mortgage interest, utilities, and insurance. Alternatively, use the simplified method: $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet ($1,500 maximum). The simplified method is easier to defend in an audit. Both are legitimate deductions that many freelancers skip.
Are client meals deductible for freelancers?+
50% deductible when the meal has a clear business purpose — meeting a current or potential client, discussing a specific project. The business purpose must be documented (who, what business purpose, where, when). Entertainment is no longer deductible at all since the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act — only meals qualify. Note that meals while traveling alone are also 50% deductible for business travel. Meals you eat while working from home are not deductible. Keep receipts and note the business purpose on each receipt at the time of the meal.
